The Perth Mint was originally established as a branch of London’s Royal Mind in 1899, and it very quickly became important in Australia’s gold industry. The Gold Kangaroo was originated created with a gold nugget etching on its backside until 1989 when it was updated to showcase a kangaroo, hence the change from Australian Gold Nugget to Australian Gold Kangaroo.

The Australian Gold is among a few selected gold coins to feature a new design every year. Additionally, only a few limited coins are minted each year, increasing the overall value.
