What is metallic standard?

A metallic standard is an economic convention in which the monetary unit of a civilization is based on metal, such as silver or gold. Under a metallic standard, its monetary unity is kept at a constant value related to the standard metal(s), i.e. 1 unit of currency = 1 ounce or gold or 12 ounces of silver.
