What is a die?

A die is a metallic piece that is used to strike a design into one side of a coin. Modern dies are made of hardened steel and are capable of stamping thousands of coins without any deformations. During the end of a die cycle, errors may be made in coins, such as wavy lines or loss of letters, which are of great value to collectors.
