Barber Dime (1892-1916)
Mint Location: Philadelphia, New Orleans, San Francisco, Denver
Designer: Charles E. Barber
Composition: 90 silver; 10% copper
Weight: 2.50g
Edge Type: Reeded
The obverse has Liberty facing right, her hair in a Phrygian cap and wearing a laurel wreath, with the word LIBERTY in tiny letters in a band above her forehead. The inscription UNITED STATES OF AMERICA surrounds, and the date is below.
The reverse is of the same design used earlier and features a large wreath enclosing ONE DIME. There was no room for the motto IN GOD WE TRUST on the coin, so it was omitted.
It is not generally realized that the obverse design of the dime differs from that of the quarter and half dollar, the dime has no stars around the obverse periphery as seen on the quarter and the half dollar.
Coin Values: The most sought after coins of this design are the Proof 1894-S, and the Regular 1895-O. Most dates are found in Good to AU grades commonly. A slabbed 1893-S VF30 Barber Dime sold for $200 while a 1909 MS67 Proof Barber Dime sold for $2400.
