The obverse depicts the head of Liberty facing left, her hair secured by a band inscribed LIBERTY, with 13 stars circling her head and with the date below. The reverse shows an eagle with a shield on its breast, perched on an olive branch and holding three arrows. In inscription UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, 5 D. surrounds. The motto E PLURIBUS UNUM, was removed to distinguish the new composition.
Coin Values: The branch mints only made these in 1838 in small quantities and are highly sought after. Those that are available are graded usually XF to MS. A 1838-C XF40 Gold $5 Classic Bust $10,500, while a 1838-D AU55 Gold $5 Classic Bust $22,500.
