The obverse design follows Augustus Saint-Gaudens’ design of the Double Eagle (1907-1933), a full-length figure of Lady Liberty striding forward, with flowing hair, holding a torch in her right hand and an olive branch in her left, with the Capitol building in the left background. The reverse design, by sculptor Miley Busiek, features a male eagle carrying an olive branch flying above a nest containing a female eagle and her hatchlings. These coins were authorized with the “Gold Bullion Act of 1985”. The purpose was for the US to compete in the International Bullion Market, against the Canadian Maple Leaf, and the Kuggurand.

Coin Value: The metal content is 22 Karet (.9167) and the value is based on metal content.  Proof Coins may carry a numismatic premium if slabbed.
