The Type 1 and 2 Liberty coins featured a female head facing left, her hair tied in a bun secured by a string of beads, wearing a coronet inscribed LIBERTY, 13 stars surrounding, with the date below. The Type 1, No Motto (1839-1866) reverse shows an eagle with a shield on its breast, perched on an olive branch and holding three arrows. The inscription UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, 2 1/2 D. surrounds.  The Type 2, With Motto (1866-1908) replaced E PLURIBUS UNUM in a ribbon just over the eagle.

Coin Values:  The coins from Charlotte, Dahlonega and San Francisco were low mintage and the green toned coins are highly sought after. The rarest is the 1854-S the first year this mint was open. A 1843 MS61 Gold $5 Liberty Head (Type1) $2350 while a 1898-S MS-62 Gold $5 Liberty Head (Type2) $505.
