The Highland Mint’s Claim to Fame

For more than 25 years the Highland Mint have minted the coin used for the Super Bowl coin toss. The flip of the coin determines which team receives control of the ball first. The coin is about the same size as a silver dollar. That explains one of the sovereign mint’s oft used tag lines: “The game doesn’t start without us.”

One thousand copies of the coin are made for each Super Bowl. The coin used in the Super Bowl is sent to the Pro Football Hall of Fame. The next 99 coins are given to players and other NFL officials, and the remaining coins are sold to the public.
