South Carolina was one of the original Thirteen Colonies, with its first permanent English settlement established in 1670 near present-day Charleston, initially called Charles Towne in honor of King Charles II. Named after King Charles I, it became a separate colony from North Carolina by 1712 and a royal colony in 1719. Early economy centered on plantations growing rice and indigo, supported by enslaved African labor, making the colony wealthy. South Carolina played a critical role in the American Revolution, with more battles fought within its borders than any other state. It ratified the U.S. Constitution on May 23, 1788, as the eighth state and was the first to secede from the Union in 1860.
