South Carolina was one of the original Thirteen Colonies, with its first permanent English settlement established in 1670 near present-day Charleston, initially called Charles Towne in honor of King Charles II. Named after King Charles I, it became a separate colony from North Carolina by 1712 and a royal colony in 1719. Early economy centered on plantations growing rice and indigo, supported by enslaved African labor, making the colony wealthy.
