Are markup and margin the same?

Markup and margin are related yet different concepts. Markup is (profit)/(initial cost) while margin is (profit)/(revenue). For instance, let’s say that you buy a bar of gold for $800 (initial cost) and you sell it for $1000 (revenue) to make $200 (profit). In this case, your markup would be 25% (i.e. ($200)/($800) = 0.25) while your margin would be 20% (i.e. ($200)/($1000) = 0.20).
