Why is it called the bar?

A more precise term for a bar of gold would be to call it an ‘ingot’. The word ‘bar’ in English comes from the word meaning ‘a long even piece of some material’ and can be used as a placeholder noun to represent all sorts of objects that are in the ‘bar’ shape.
