What do the different mint marks mean?

There are currently 4 different mint marks being applied to coins. P (or no mark) means the coin was minted at the Philadelphia Mint, D means it was minted in Denver, S means it was minted in San Francisco, and W means it was minted in West Point, NY. Although less common, some coins minted before 1909 carry the mint mark from a now-defunct minting site. The mint mark C means the coin was minted in Charlotte, NC, D means it was minted in Dahlonega, GA, O means it was minted in New Orleans, LA, and CC means it was minted in Carson City, NV.
