What is the Hard Times Token?
Hard Times tokens were penny and half-penny coins that were made privately between the financial crisis of 1833-1843 and served as unofficial currency. Many of these coins have political humor on them, including Andrew Jackson in a treasure chest, Sisyphus holding up the national debt, and flying pigs. Despite their rarity and colorful designs, these coins usually aren’t worth more than $50 each on the open market.
