Lbs stands for the unit of measurement ‘pounds’ in modern English. The reason why ‘Lbs’ is used as the abbreviation is that a pound used to be called a Libra. A libra, in ancient Rome, was the proper name for a balance. One libra (or pound) of gold was equal to a one libra weight when measured on a balance.
