Is private currency legal?

Private currencies are legal in the United States as long as they can be exchanged for US dollars. Minting coins in your own currency, however, may be punishable under U.S. law (18 U.S. § 486), although those laws were originally intended to combat forgery. Many small communities have issued their own form of private currency, however, these currencies are often short lived.
