What causes iridescence?

Iridescence is caused by the interaction of photons of light with layers of ‘thin films’ or substances that are in the micron range for thickness. When photons pass through these ‘thin films’ the interference between each layer causes light from different wavelengths to be emitted from the substance, causing iridescence.
