What is a Laureate?

A laureate is the image of a wreath-crown that was reserved for distinguished heroes and poets of antiquity. During the roman empire, it was common for coins to be minted with heroes adorning laurels upon their heads. Another common practice of the era was to have the reverse side of the coin display a laurel encircling the numerical value of the coin.
