What is a privy mark?

A privy mark is a special kind of mint mark that is used to commemorate a special occasion or year.  Privy marks aren’t used in the US, but are relatively common in Britain and British territories, (former or current). For instance, 2016 Canadian Silver Maple Leaf coins had a Mark V tank instead of the regular mint mark in order to celebrate the anniversary of the Canadian Mark V concept.
