What is fractional currency?

Fractional currency was paper money that was introduced by the federal government during the Civil War in order to replace physical coinage due to a metal shortage. Fractional currency was produced from 1862 to 1876, and came in denominations of $0.03, $0.05, $0.10, $0.15, $0.25, and $0.50.
