What is platinum and why is it so expensive?

Platinum is a precious metal in the platinum group of elements on the periodic table. It is expensive because the demand for it in various industries, (automotive, dentistry, electrical, jewelry etc.), far outstrips the supply. As platinum is one of the rarest metals on earth, the amount mined per year and the total amount on the market is very low.
