SilverTowne Mint
SilverTowne started out in 1949 as a coin shop in rural Indiana, to grow into one of the leading precious metals and numismatics sellers in the nation. The company operates an e-commerce website selling IRA-approved gold, silver and platinum bullion, United States and international coins, and other gifts.
The company also produces its own silver bars and rounds under the name SilverTowne Mint. The sovereign mint makes an assortment of its own silver bars and rounds, as well as custom themed silver bullion for corporate gifts and other organizations. The mint is also a leading manufacturer of Challenge Coins for military, fire and police organizations.
SilverTowne was founded in 1949 in Winchester, Indiana by Leon Hendrickson and his wife Ruhama. The rural coin shop eventually would go on to become a thriving multi-million dollar business. In the early 1970s, SilverTowne recognized an opportunity to mint its own proprietary bullion products, as few companies were doing so at the time. In 1973, the company launched SilverTowne Mint. Today, the mint produces hundred of thousands of ounces of fine silver bullion each month.
In 2016, A-Mark Precious Metals acquired a majority stake in SilverTowne Mint. At the same time, the mint entered into an arrangement with Asahi Holdings to be its exclusive source of silver feedstock for minting bullion. SilverTowne’s other businesses, the coin shop and retail website, continue to operate as wholly owned enterprises.

SilverTowne’s Claim to Fame
SilverTowne is well known in the numismatic community for the rags-to-riches story of its illustrious founder Leon Hendrickson. Raised on a farm, Hendrickson served in the South Pacific during World War II. After returning from the war, Hendrickson served as a mailman, labored as a farmer, ran two skating rinks and a restaurant.
It was at the restaurant were Hendrickson got the coin collecting bug, having dibs on rare coins passing through its cash register. Hendrickson kept unique coins in a cigar box, and before long was selling collectible coins to customers. A bit later Hendrickson was making weekly trips to Washington D.C. with his brother-in-law to buy $1,000 bags of silver coins. When silver prices were run up to their peak in 1980 by the Hunt Brothers, Silvertowne cashed in and expanded their business even more.
Hendrickson’s success made him a target in 1973 when two men from Chicago came to town to kill and rob him and his wife. The robbery and murder attempt failed, and one of the attackers actually died from injuries sustained during the melee. The fiasco is detailed in a biography of Hendricksons called Rare Coins, Rare People by Jan Chalfant. Hendrickson passed away in 2017 at the age of 90 years.
