What is an American Gold Buffalo?

Pure 24-karat gold coin minted by the US Mint in 2006. Design is the same as 1913 “Indian Head Nickle” and derives its name from the American Bison on its reverse. Comes 1 oz, 1/2 oz, 1/4oz, and 1/10 oz.

Each size has face values of $50 USD, $25 USD, $10 USD, and $5 USD respectively. However, the listed bullion price of a 1 oz American Gold Buffalo was $1,6000 USD on the US Mint Catalog. This coin is accepted in Gold IRAs. American Gold Buffalo Coins, are highly valued, limited edition coins, created by the U.S. Mint. They were reintroduced to the consumer market as the first-ever 24-karat gold bullion coins to be created by the mint.

American Gold Buffalo Coins now in circulation are collectors editions of the original coin. The U.S. mint sells these coins in a unique hardwood box with an accompanying certificate of authenticity. The original coin was inspired by the Type I Buffalo nickel created by the American sculptor James Earle Frase, and was in circulation for 25 years before retirement in 1938. Frase was introduced to Native American culture and frontier life for an early age, his work including the Type I Buffalo nickel and reflected in the American Gold Buffalo Coin, demonstrate this early childhood experience.

The first commemorative coin was released in 2001 by the U.S. Mint and was offered for sale in June 2006. The U.S. Mint briefly halted production of the coin due to the soar in demand by investors and collectors, who were attracted to the relatively safe investment in gold, particularly after the crash of 2008.

  • 99,500 in 2017
  • 219,500 in 2016
