What is the American Numismatic Association (ANA)?
A non-profit organization formed to advance the study of coins, as well as enhance interest in the hobby, headquartered in Colorado Springs, Colorado. The American Numismatic Association (ANA) publishes a monthly rotational, The Numismatist, and hosts educational workshops to inform collectors.
It also provides access to grading as well as conversation services through the NGC and PMG. Since it’s founding, the ANA has become the largest global non-profit numismatic group of its kind. The mission of the ANA is to lead the exploration and discovery of the world and history of money through multiple and varied educational services and resources. Their current programs are included in museums, libraries, conventions, seminars, and in its publication.
On October, 7 and 8th in 1891 five men, including the pioneer of the organization, Dr. George F. Heath, met in Chicago with 61 founding members to establish the AMA. The vision for a national numismatic association was first cast by Dr. Heath, a doctor, and argent coin collector, and enthusiast based in the small town of Monroe, Michigan. Dr. Heath, having no access to fellow collectors, created a collection of papers, written, edited, published, and distributed by him, for other numismatic aficionados as a way to share ideas. The success of the publication led him to believe that there were enough like-minded but similarly disconnected numismatics who were not able to take part in existing numismatic societies in larger cities. These organizations were large, but that didn’t have the scope and influence to include small-town devotees.
Since its founding, the ANA has become the largest global non-profit numismatic group. It is also the home of the largest numismatic library with well over 120,000 books, auction catalogs, publications, and DVDs. The association serves all communities, including collectors, individuals in academia, and anyone who has an interest in the history and continued study of all things money.
