What is an Australian Gold Nugget?
Gold bullion coin minted in Perth Mint, Australia. They have denominations based on ounces of 24-carat gold: 1/20, /10, 1/4, 1/2, 1 oz, 2 oz, 10 oz, and 1 kg. Due to being minted annually, this can raise their numismatic, or collector’s value, over the price of the gold used to make them.
The Australian Gold Nugget is part of a series that was first introduced in 1986 by the Perth Mint in Western Australia, also known as the Gold Corporation. The coin series has two unique features. First, the gold coins have a frosted two-tone design and hard plastic encapsulation for each coin. This makes the Australian Gold Nugget unique in the bouillon market.
The original 1986 design featured different images of Australian Gold Nuggets on the rear of the coin. The design was updated in 1989 to feature different Australian Kangaroos, a globally recognized symbol of Australia, hence the change of name from The Australian Gold Nugget to the Australian Gold Kangaroo.
