What is Canadian Paper Money Society (CPMS)?
A nonprofit numismatic organization founded in 1964 for collectors of Canadian paper money. The organization publishes a journal quarterly on various notaphily subjects. They have amassed 41 years of Canadian paper money collecting trends.
The primary goal of the Canadian Paper Money Society (CPMS) is to record historical and statistical records of money issuing organizations throughout Canada and promote and support the study of paper money, which includes government and private issues, stocks, and bonds, etc. The group boasts members not only in Canada but also across the United States and the world.
CPMS aims to preserve the history of Canada’s financial development by analyzing and publishing journals. The society publishes a journal every quarter and each issue contains updated news including the society’s current affairs, banknote registration, registrations of various banknotes, and research and data on banknotes, etc. Occasionally the society will publish supplementary journals with additional numismatic material and information.
The current president of CPMS is Cliff Beattie who has served since 2007. Previous presidents include:
- Earl Salterio served from 2001 to 2003
- Charles Moore served from 2003 to 2005
- Harold Brown served from 2005-2007
CPMS has an extensive library for the Royal Canadian Numismatic Association which covers a variety of numismatic subjects. This library is only available to members. It provides members access to past and present journal issues and allows members to share information, such as public numismatic auctions and sales, and numismatic materials amongst themselves.
Notably, CPMS published indices for its Journals and Newsletters. The index covers the periods between 1965 to 2005 and includes a list of alphabetized subjects and authors making it much easier for members and non-members to easily track down particular journals based on the subject matter.
CPMS engages its members further by awarding annual prizes for Canadian money displays and provides support to various coin shows and numismatic events throughout the year.
