Unit of measurement represented by ( Kt). Used specifically to describe gold purity. This unit is typically used for more common forms of bullion such as coins. Karats are also frequently used to describe the fineness of gold jewelry. Using karats is easier than using percentages of mass in alloys for consumers. Karats are a ratio: the gold within an alloy to the total mass of the alloy times 24. Therefore, a 24 karat gold coin has 99.9% of gold or more.
