Base metals such as aluminum, copper, or nickel, combined with another elemental metal. These alloys are used to combine with precious metals to make them more stable. Gold, for example, is very soft and can be prone to damage. To strengthen gold bullion, the product is smelted with a master alloy to make it more stable for shipping.
